Jewellery and accessories are where AliExpress is hardest to judge from a photograph. A ten-dollar necklace and a two-dollar necklace are photographed on the same white background under the same lights, and one of them turns your skin green in a fortnight.
The difference is almost never visible in the picture. It is in one line of the specifications. This page lists what is discounted now, then shows you which line to read.

⚠️ The metal is the whole decision
Everything about how long a piece lasts, and whether you can wear it against skin, comes down to what it is made of. The listing states this, usually in the specifications table rather than the title.
- Stainless steel (316L) — the best value in the category by a distance. It does not tarnish, does not rust, does not react with skin, and survives showers and swimming. If you want one thing to look for, it is this.
- Titanium steel — a marketing name for stainless steel, usually 316L. Treat it as the same thing. Good.
- Sterling silver (S925) — genuine silver, hypoallergenic, and it will tarnish. That is normal and polishes out. Look for the 925 stamp mentioned in the specifications.
- Gold plated / 18K gold plated — a microscopically thin layer of gold over a base metal. It looks right and it wears through, typically in months with daily wear. Fine for occasional pieces, poor value for something you never take off.
- Alloy / zinc alloy — the two-dollar tier. It is base metal with a coating, and it is what causes green skin and reactions. Acceptable for a statement piece worn a handful of times; avoid for earrings, which sit in a wound.
- Copper / brass — will patina and will mark skin, though harmlessly. Some people like the effect.
The rule for earrings specifically: the post goes through your skin, so it should be stainless steel, sterling silver, or titanium — nothing else. Many cheap earrings have a decorative alloy front with a steel post, and good listings say so. If the material line only says “alloy”, do not put it in your ear.
Watches: what moves the hands
- Quartz — battery powered, accurate, cheap to run. Almost everything at this price is quartz, and that is the right choice.
- “Automatic” under twenty dollars — a mechanical movement at that price is the cheapest grade available. It will gain or lose several minutes a day. Buy it as an object, not as a timekeeper.
- Water resistance — “3ATM” means splashes and rain only, not swimming. “5ATM” handles a shower. “10ATM” handles swimming. “Waterproof” with no number means nothing at all.
- Case diameter — stated in millimetres, and the single most useful number. Under 34mm is small on most wrists, 36 to 40mm is the usual range, over 42mm is large. The photo cannot tell you this; the number can.
Bags: where the cost actually went
The body of a cheap bag is usually PU leather, which is a plastic coating on fabric. It looks convincing when new, and after a year or two of use it begins to flake at the corners. That is the nature of the material, not a defect, and it is a fair trade at the price.
What separates a bag that lasts two years from one that lasts two months is never the material — it is the hardware and the stitching:
- The zip. A listing that names the zip brand is a listing that spent money on it. The zip is what fails first on almost every cheap bag.
- The strap attachment. Look at buyer photos for where the strap meets the body. Rivets outlast stitching through a single layer.
- The lining. An unlined bag is a bag built down to a price.
And the obvious one: a listing using a famous brand’s name, logo or monogram at a tenth of the real price is a counterfeit. They are seized at customs in many countries, and the quality is no better than an honest unbranded bag at the same price.
Scarves, hats and hair accessories
This is the lowest-risk corner of the category. There is no sizing problem, no metal reaction, no electronics. The only real check is the fibre: “cashmere” at three dollars is acrylic, and that is fine as long as you expected acrylic. Real wool and real cashmere listings state the percentage and cost accordingly.
The things people complain about afterwards
- Green skin. Alloy against skin, almost always. Stainless steel or sterling silver solves it permanently.
- The plating wore off. Expected behaviour for gold plating. Keep plated pieces away from perfume, hairspray and water, and take them off to shower — it roughly doubles their life.
- It is much smaller than the photo. Jewellery is photographed enormously magnified. Chain length and pendant size are in the specifications in centimetres. A 45cm chain sits at the collarbone; 50cm sits lower.
- The stone fell out. Glued settings at this price are normal. Prong settings, where the listing shows them, last far longer.
- It tarnished. If it is sterling silver, that is silver behaving normally — polish it. If it is plated, the plating has gone.
Frequently asked questions
Which metal should I buy if I have sensitive skin?
316L stainless steel, titanium, or sterling silver. Avoid anything listed only as alloy, and avoid nickel specifically if you know you react to it.
Can I shower or swim in it?
In stainless steel, yes. In sterling silver, yes, though it will tarnish faster. In anything plated, no — water is what takes the plating off.
Is “18K gold plated” real gold?
The plating layer is real gold, and it is a few microns thick. The piece underneath is base metal. It is not an investment, it is a finish.
How long does delivery take?
Two to five weeks on free standard shipping to most countries, three to seven days on paid express from a local warehouse. Small jewellery often arrives faster than the estimate.
The short version
Read the material line before the price. Stainless steel for anything worn daily, sterling silver if you want the look of silver, plated only for occasional pieces, and never alloy in a pierced ear. For watches, check the case diameter in millimetres and treat “waterproof” without a number as meaningless. For bags, judge the zip and the strap attachment, and walk past anything carrying a logo it has no right to.
