Lighting is the one purchase that improves footage from any camera, including the phone you already own. It is also the category where the price gap between AliExpress and a camera shop is widest, because a softbox is fabric and wire and an LED panel is a circuit board and a diffuser.
The catch is that two panels that look identical can render skin completely differently, and the number that tells you which is which is often missing from the listing. This page lists what is discounted now, then explains what to look for.

⚠️ CRI: the number that decides whether skin looks right
CRI (Colour Rendering Index) measures how accurately a light shows colour compared with daylight, on a scale to 100. It is the single most important specification in this category and the one most often left out.
- CRI 95+ — colours and skin tones look natural. This is what you want for people, food and products.
- CRI 90 to 95 — good, and fine for most video.
- CRI below 85 — skin goes slightly green or grey and no amount of colour grading fully fixes it, because the light never emitted those wavelengths in the first place.
- No CRI stated — assume it is low. A manufacturer who spent money on good diodes puts the number in the title.
This is why a twelve-dollar panel and a thirty-dollar panel can look the same in photos of the product and completely different in photos taken with the product.
Colour temperature: fixed or bi-colour
Measured in Kelvin. Around 5600K is daylight; around 3200K is warm indoor light.
- Bi-colour lights adjust between the two. Worth it if you shoot in different rooms or mix with window light, which most people do.
- Fixed daylight is cheaper and perfectly fine if you always shoot in the same controlled setup.
- RGB lights add colour effects. They are fun, and the white quality on cheap RGB units is usually worse than a plain white panel at the same price. If the job is lighting a face, buy the white one.
The practical rule: whatever you choose, match all your lights and the room. Mixing a 5600K panel with warm ceiling bulbs gives you one blue side and one orange side of the face, and that is harder to fix than being slightly too warm overall.
Wattage claims, and what to measure instead
Listings advertise enormous wattage numbers — “800W equivalent” — which are marketing conversions, not power draw. The honest figure is lux at one metre, and good listings state it.
As a rough guide for a single subject at one to two metres: a panel around 30 to 50 real watts is enough for indoor video. For stills you can use a weaker light and a slower shutter.
Also check how it is powered. Many panels take camera-style battery plates (NP-F) with no battery included, and the listing photo shows one anyway. Mains-powered is cheaper and tethers you to a socket; USB-C powered panels are the most convenient for small setups.
Softbox or panel
They do different jobs and the choice is about the quality of shadow, not brightness:
- Softbox — a big diffused source. Soft, flattering shadows, good for faces and products. Bulky, needs assembly, and takes floor space. The larger the box relative to the subject, the softer the light.
- LED panel — compact, instant, and harder-edged unless you add a diffuser. Good on a desk, on a camera, or for a second light.
- Ring light — even, shadowless, with the characteristic circular catchlight in the eyes. Excellent for close-up faces and makeup, unflattering for anything with texture, and useless as a general-purpose light.
If you buy one thing for filming yourself at a desk, a 10 to 14 inch ring light or a small softbox beats any panel. If you buy one thing to light a room or a product, a softbox.
Stands: the part people underspend on
A light stand is the cheapest item in the order and the one that drops your light on the floor. Check the maximum height and the load rating, and prefer a wider footprint over a taller reach. Air-cushioned stands lower slowly instead of dropping on your fingers, and cost almost nothing extra.
For a softbox, also check the mount: the common standard is a Bowens mount, and a softbox with a Bowens ring fits any Bowens light. A proprietary mount locks you to one seller.
The things people complain about afterwards
- The light flickers on video. Cheap drivers pulse at a rate your camera can see, especially at high frame rates. Listings that mention “flicker-free” or a stated PWM frequency are addressing this; most do not.
- The colour is green. Low CRI. Not fixable in editing.
- The battery was not included. Standard for NP-F panels. Read the variant.
- The softbox was missing a part. These ship as many small pieces. Count them against the listing before discarding packaging.
- It got hot. Normal for higher-power panels. Metal-bodied ones handle it better than plastic.
- Wrong plug or voltage. Mains lights come in regional variants. Match the voltage to your country before you look at the plug.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cheap LED panel good enough for YouTube?
Yes, if the CRI is 95 or above and it does not flicker. Those two things matter far more than brightness or brand.
Do I need two lights?
One good light plus a white wall or a cheap reflector gets you most of the way. A second light is for separating the subject from the background, which matters less than people think.
Ring light or softbox for makeup videos?
Ring light for the even, shadowless look and the catchlight. Add a softbox later if you want more dimension.
How long does delivery take?
Two to five weeks on free standard shipping to most countries, three to seven days on paid express from a local warehouse. Softboxes are bulky and often ship slower.
The short version
Buy CRI 95 or higher and treat a missing CRI figure as a low one. Choose bi-colour unless your setup never changes. Ignore “equivalent wattage” and look for lux at one metre. Match the colour temperature of every light in the room. Spend a few extra dollars on a stand with a wide base, and check whether the battery is actually included before you order.
