⚠️ The line: what not to buy here
Do not buy, from any unbranded seller, anything where failure means a loaded weight lands on you:
- Squat racks, power racks and spotter arms
- Barbell collars for heavy lifting
- Weight bench frames and adjustable benches
- Pull-up bars that wedge into a doorway by friction
- Climbing or suspension anchors
Nothing on this list is expensive enough locally to be worth the risk, and none of these items carry a verifiable load rating from an unbranded listing. A stated “300kg capacity” with no standard behind it is a number someone typed.

Resistance bands: the best value in the category
Two different products share the name, and they are not interchangeable:
- Latex loop bands (the thin flat ones) — for warm-ups, glute work and rehab. Cheap, effective, and they snap eventually. That is normal wear, not a defect.
- Fabric booty bands — do not roll up or pinch skin the way latex does, cost a little more, and last much longer. For hip and glute work these are the better buy and the difference is noticeable.
- Tube bands with handles — check the clip and the anchor, which are the failure points. Never anchor one in a door hinge, and never stretch one toward your face.
Resistance is usually given as a range in pounds or kilograms, and it is approximate. Buy a set of three to five rather than one; the set costs barely more than a single band.
Water bottles: what the material tells you
- Stainless steel — look for 304 for the inner wall. Ungraded “stainless” is usually 201, which pits and gives water a metallic taste over time. Double-walled vacuum bottles keep temperature; single-walled ones sweat.
- Tritan plastic — BPA-free, clear, light, and fine for cold drinks. Not for boiling water.
- “BPA free” with no material named — assume ordinary polypropylene. Acceptable for cold water, not for heat.
- Capacity — stated in millilitres, and it is the brim volume, not the usable volume. A “1000ml” bottle holds a bit less in practice.
- The lid is what fails. Flip-top and straw lids leak first. A simple screw lid outlasts everything else in a gym bag.
Mats, gloves and small gear
- Yoga and exercise mats — thickness is the whole decision. 4 to 6mm for yoga, where you want stability; 10mm or more for floor work and knees. TPE is lighter and less smelly than NBR foam. All of them smell for the first few days; air them outdoors.
- Gloves and wrist wraps — size by measuring your palm circumference against the chart, and expect a snug fit. These run small.
- Skipping ropes — the cheap ones are fine. Steel-cable speed ropes with a bearing handle are worth a few dollars more if you actually skip fast; PVC ropes tangle.
- Ab wheels, push-up bars, grip trainers — simple, load is your own body, and they are good value. Check the wheel is wide rather than narrow; narrow ones are unstable.
- Massage guns — a motor under thirty dollars will be loud and the stated stall force will be optimistic. The attachments matter more than the headline amplitude number, and check whether the battery is replaceable.
Smart scales and trackers
Body-composition scales measure weight accurately and estimate everything else by sending a small current through your feet. The weight figure is real; the body-fat percentage is an estimate with a wide error margin that shifts with hydration. Use it to watch a trend over weeks, never as a number to trust on any given morning.
As with any connected gadget, check which app it uses and whether that app exists for your phone before ordering.

- The band snapped. Latex perishes with sunlight, heat and sweat. Store it out of the sun, rinse after use, and replace it when it goes tacky.
