Stationery is the single lowest-risk category on AliExpress. Nothing here has a battery that can fail, a size chart to misread or a safety standard to worry about. A pen either writes or it does not, and you will know within a day.
It is also where the markup you avoid is largest in percentage terms. The same gel pen that a stationery shop sells for two dollars arrives here at twenty cents, from the same factory. This page lists what is discounted now, then covers what separates the good from the merely cheap.

Pens: the numbers that actually matter
Two specifications decide how a pen feels, and both are printed on every honest listing:
- Tip size in millimetres. 0.38mm is fine and precise, and it is the standard choice for small handwriting, annotations and anyone who writes in a crowded margin. 0.5mm is the everyday default. 0.7mm and up are smoother and bolder, and they bleed through thin paper. If you are buying one size without being sure, buy 0.5.
- Ink type. Gel ink is smooth and dark and takes a moment to dry — left-handed writers smudge it. Ballpoint is instant-dry and scratchier. “Quick dry” gel is a real category and genuinely works, and it is the right answer if you write left-handed.
Erasable pens are worth knowing about: the ink disappears with friction heat rather than being rubbed away. They are excellent for study notes and a terrible idea for anything official — a hot car will erase a whole page.
Buy pens in multipacks. The per-unit price collapses, and a single pen costs more to ship than it does to make.
Notebooks: check the paper weight
The number to look for is GSM, the paper’s weight in grams per square metre. It appears in the specifications and it is the whole story:
- 70 to 80 GSM — standard, cheap, and ghosting shows through from the other side with a gel pen.
- 100 GSM and up — no bleed-through with normal pens. Worth the extra for anything you write in daily.
- 120 GSM and up — handles fountain pens and markers.
Also check the binding. Spiral notebooks lie flat and catch on bags. Stitched and glued notebooks are tidier and will not open flat at the first and last pages. Neither is better; they just suit different habits.
Backpacks and pencil cases
For a backpack, the fabric is almost never the problem. Three things are:
- The strap join. Where the shoulder strap meets the body is where cheap bags tear. Buyer photos show the stitching; seller photos are renders.
- The zip. The second failure point. Listings that name the zip are listings that spent money there.
- The laptop compartment’s real dimensions. “Fits 15.6 inch” is a claim about a thin laptop. Check the centimetre dimensions against your actual machine, which may be thicker than the one the seller measured.
Desk and study gear
This is the quiet value corner: desk organisers, book stands, cable clips, timers, lamp clips, sticky-note sets and planner stickers are simple moulded objects with nothing to go wrong, sold at a tenth of retail.
Two exceptions worth flagging. Anything with a rechargeable battery — a desk lamp, a timer, a mini fan — is a different kind of product: it ships by a slower restricted route and the battery is the cheapest part of the build. And calculators sold as a specific exam model are often copies with different key behaviour, which is a problem if your exam board allows only named models.
What is not worth ordering
- Single items. One pen, one notebook. The economics only work in multipacks or combined with a larger order.
- Anything needed next week. Standard shipping is weeks. Stationery is a plan-ahead purchase.
- Branded art markers at a tenth of the price. They are copies, the colours do not match the real numbering system, and they dry out.
- Liquid items in winter. Ink bottles and glue can freeze and split in transit on long routes.
The things people complain about afterwards
- The pen skipped from the first line. It happens at the very bottom of the price range. The fix is to buy from listings with thousands of orders rather than the absolute cheapest.
- The notebook was smaller than expected. A5 and B5 are not the same, and “A5” is roughly half a sheet of printer paper. The dimensions are in the specifications.
- The set had fewer pieces. Photos of a full set with single-piece pricing are common. The variant dropdown is what you are buying.
- The colour was different. Pastel stationery photographs more saturated than it arrives. Buyer photos are the correction.
